Love and war set the scene for this Golden Age musical that premiered on Broadway in 1949 and was an immediate hit, running for almost 2,000 performances. Based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Tales of the South Pacific, this show features some of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s best musical numbers like “Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair,” “Younger Than Springtime,” and “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame.” Spend “Some Enchanted Evening” when you see South Pacific at the Playhouse starting June 29th through July 8th. Weathervane Rating: PG

Notes from the Director
Valerie AccettaAccetta, Valerie 2017 Summer Headshot

“The musical South Pacific takes place in the stunning Solomon Islands during World War II, reminding us that atrocities can occur even in the most beautiful of places or hearts. People with strong values, kind hearts and a joyful sense of humor can still harbor distrust of people they don’t understand. Particularly in times of war and turmoil, fear can lead to widespread intolerance and resentment. As we witness the loveable Nellie Forbush confronting her own prejudices, it becomes clear that we have to be ‘carefully taught to hate and fear’. There is hope, though, that through self-reflection, we can also learn to feel empathy and open our hearts to one another.”
