New WYART Classes Coming January 2021!!

NEW WYART CLASSES ADWe are excited to announce our new list of WYART classes.

While we are planning both in-person and virtual classes, we are carefully monitoring COVID cases and restrictions. If, for any reason, we feel it is unsafe to hold these classes in-person, they will be converted to virtual classes.

All Classes start the week of January 11 and are 6 week 1 hour sessions.

Puppetry 101:  Elementary ONLINE- Thursdays 6-7 

Students will learn the basics of puppetry and construct and design several of their own creations with Sarah Borne professional Puppeteer! Each week will center on a different style of puppetry: Found Object, Shadow Puppets, Cardboard Tube Puppets, Bandana Hand Puppet, Masks, and how to lip-sync! This class is for kids who love crafting, creating, and performing!

There will be some basic materials that you will need to get on your own, that you probably already have at home and this list will be shared with confirmation of your registration.

Puppetry 101: Middle/High School- ONLINE Tuesdays 6-7 

Students will learn the basics of puppetry and construct and design several of their own creations with Sarah Borne professional Puppeteer! Each week will center on a different style of puppetry: Object Theatre, Shadow Puppets, Story Telling, Hand puppets, Masks, and how to lip-sync! This class is for students who love crafting, creating, and performing!

Instructor Bio:

Sarah Bourne is a theatre artist who specializes in puppetry, costumes, makeup, and performance art. Her work starts with the creation of whimsical story worlds with rich visual context. Puppetry is Sarah’s first love, a connection which started watching visiting puppet shows at her schools and staying up late to watch The Muppet Show on Fridays. She highly enjoys opening the door to puppetry exploration to all ages and tending the creative spark of storytelling.

She has performed puppetry in Minneapolis, Baltimore, Salt Lake City, Shepherdstown, and Boston as well as performing in shows with the Underground Railway Theatre, the University of Utah Lyric Ensemble, and the Contemporary American Theatre Festival.

Her work as a costume and hair and makeup technician has been seen on stage for Sesame Street LIVE! and other VEE Corporation Productions, the Minnesota Opera, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, Connecticut Repertory Theatre, Utah Opera, the Utah Shakespearean Festival, the Hartford Stage Company, and the Goodman Theatre.

Sarah holds a B.F.A. and an M.A. in Puppetry Arts from the University of Connecticut and an M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Theatre and Performance Art from Towson University.

As Seen on Broadway: ages 8-12 ONLINE Tuesdays 6-7 

As Seen on Broadway Theater Class: Learn original Broadway choreography!  Not only will you learn the choreography from a broadway show, but also learn about the shows, the people who originally created and why it is important to know Musical Theatre history as well as doing research on the show you are dancing from in order to tell the best story you can through movement!

As Seen on Broadway: ages 13-18 ONLINE Tuesdays 7-8

As Seen on Broadway Theater Class: Learn original Broadway choreography!  Not only will you learn the choreography from a broadway show, but also learn about the shows, the people who originally created and why it is important to know Musical Theatre history as well as doing research on the show you are dancing from in order to tell the best story you can through movement!

In “As Seen On Broadway”, we will learn original choreography from 3 different Broadway shows! Taking these original moves, we’ll break it down, explore the meaning behind the movement, and dance it out! Come join Katie in this star studded, energy filled once in a lifetime class!

ACTING A SONG! Elementary: ONLINE Thursdays 7-8 

Students will learn to analyze a song, through acting and what the script tells them about the character, the lyrics of the song, and the music. The end result will be a song performance interpreted and created by the student! Taught by Kayla Ryan Walsh

Instructor Bio: 

Kayla Ryan Walsh is originally from Bend, Oregon, and is currently an EMC working actor in New York City. She has been a teaching artist for 10+ years in Oregon, Ohio, and New York, and is passionate about creating a safe space for students to ask questions and fail, as well as fully embrace the uniqueness they bring to the theatre community and Ensemble. Kayla has worked regionally as an actor at The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Theatre Aspen, Weathervane Playhouse, Mill Mountain Theatre, Woodstock Playhouse, and many more. She also was an Acting Apprentice at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, and received a Fulbright Scholarship to study Shakespeare at The Globe in London, under direction of Philip Bird. Storytelling 101: ELEMENTARY IN PERSON Wednesdays 6-7 PM

Students will learn to tell stories visually using their bodies, voices, and through drawing.  This class will center on the individual student’s best modalities- and build on their skills to tell a story in a unique way.  Skills that will be taught are acting, singing, dancing, drawing, painting, and writing. This is a great class for kids to get started in theatre and is open for students in elementary school.  This class is taught by Ali Booher Evans, the theatre education director.

This class meets on Wednesdays from 6-7 in person at Weathervane Playhouse. Due to COVID-19, masks must be worn by participants, and instructors and there are limited spots available to ensure social distancing in the classroom.  This class may revert to online if there is a concern for the class and Covid 19.

DESIGN 101: Middle/High School  IN PERSON Wednesdays 7:15-8:15 

This class will explore what goes into a design for theatre.  Design areas covered include Set Design, lighting design, costume design, Properties Design, and more! Students will learn to analyze a script while creating their own designs in their areas of interest. This class will be taught by Ali Booher Evans, Wyart’s Theatre Education Director.

Instructor Bio:

Ali Booher Evans: Her career in theatre started at Weathervane when she was 10 years old, and was handed a glue gun by a costume designer to help make costumes for The Last Unicorn. Since then, Ali has been lucky enough to have been involved with hundreds of professional theatre productions across the country.  She has primarily worked in design and Puppetry Arts, creating puppets, shows and productions with The Connecticut Repertory Theatre, Lyons Puppets, Landis and Company Theatre of Magic, CATCO, Columbus Children’s Theatre, and many others.  Her favorite production to work on was, For The Love Of Three Oranges, Designed by Maurice Sendak as a lowly properties intern at the Juilliard School. She has a BA in Theatre from the College of Wooster, MA in Puppetry Arts from UCONN and an M.Ed. from Xavier in Special Education.  She currently is the Theatre Education Director at WYART and an Intervention Specialist at Newark High School.
