About the Authors

Based on a book by Hugh Wheeler, a British-American author born in London, Sweeney Todd was adapted into a play by Christopher Bond in 1970.

These highly talented and successful creators made this award-winning musical come to life. The first performance of Sweeney Todd as a musical premiered in 1979, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

With its famously large orchestra, complex scores, and intricate themes of love and revenge, it is no wonder this work has many adaptations and revivals, including that of Tim Burton’s movie rendition.

Theatres innovate set designs with large, impressive Victorian London sets and detailed lighting to create atmosphere. Its rich sound requires skilled musicians and singers along with demanding technical needs for sets, lighting, and choreography–sure to be a delight!

Who is Sweeney Todd…

Sweeney Todd, formerly known as a barber named Benjamin Barker, is a mysterious man who is eerie with his rhyming words. After being falsely exiled to jail for 15 years, he returns under a new identity seeking revenge on the judge who accused him.

Judge Turpin stalks Sweeney Todd’s wife, and after imprisoning Todd, he steps in and ravishes her, then traps Todd and his wife’s daughter in his own home. When Todd returns to town, he is told by meat pie bakery owner, Mrs. Lovett, that his wife poisoned herself.

Mrs. Lovett, a struggling businesswoman, takes Todd under her wing, trying to convince him to leave the past behind and not seek revenge for his broken family, and become a barber above her shop once again. Haunted by ghosts, this demon barber can’t seem to leave it alone, sharpening his set of blades.

Using Todd’s murderous mindset to her advantage, her gruesome business scheme for her meat pie bakery brings in customers like no other. From worst meat pies to best, you’ll be wondering what the secret ingredient is…

A young fellow named Toby unknowingly helps them with this plan, assisting Mrs. Lovett in her manipulative, evil ways as her bakery. Hungry for more power and more time with Todd, she aids him in his killing spree.

The demented duo worries the town with the smell from the bakery. Unbothered by the mind of Todd, his friend, Anthony, sets off on a quest to find the girl he saw trapped in the judge’s house and save her. Requesting to hide her in the barber shop for a few hours, Sweeney Todd can’t help but oblige.

The ever-present street beggar returns to the bakery time and time again, with warnings about the evil Mrs. Lovett, eventually to her own demise. The ruthless Todd continues his spree; forgiveness is nowhere in sight.

With justice yet to be served and only never-ending meat pies on the table, the audience is slashed back and forth in this twisted, dark plot. The story heads off with a surprising ending that will leave you in utter shock.
