Season subscriptions provide many benefits to both the theatre and patron! In recent years, though, season subscription sales across the country have decreased and buying patterns have changed. According to Captitles, renewal rates are sitting around 40-50% nowadays instead of 70%.
This shift is forcing theatres to re-evaluate their programming and how they get patrons through the door while still making long-time supporters happy. Whether you’re a single ticket buyer or ongoing subscriber, here’s why season subscriptions are still vital to a theatre’s success.

Creating Loyalty
Whether it’s your first-year, tenth-year, or fiftieth-year, subscribers play a big role in filling the theatre. Subscribers are the ones who pre-commit to your season with no strings attached. This commitment creates loyalty. Think of it this way – let’s compare a subscription to a Kroger loyalty card. With a Kroger card, you download the Kroger app, load coupons onto your card, and get discounts on gas with every purchase you make. With a subscription, you purchase your tickets up front but with automatic benefits. At Weathervane, we offer our subscribers discount pricing on tickets, same seats for the entire season, free exchanges within the same show, and first dibs to renew their seats from the previous season.
Repeat subscribers understand the benefits of a subscription and will continue supporting to receive the benefits they’ve come to expect.
Investment from Subscribers
As previously mentioned, subscribers have already bought in to what you offer, so they are investing in your productions ahead of time. This investment is what theaters rely on to begin their production process, including audition/hiring needs, solidifying housing, stipends for actors/technicians, and much more. Without this investment, theatres have to be careful with their pre-production expenses, which is why a decrease in season subscriptions truly impacts the production as a whole.
However, the decrease in subscriptions isn’t because of one specific reason. New generations have different expectations and wants, so as individuals age, the buying patterns change. Here is what’s affecting subscriptions:
- Busy lifestyles – With more to do than ever before, patrons are not wanting to over-commit or commit too early. Ticket buyers are also becoming late buyers, meaning they purchase tickets within a week of the performance.
- Need for flexibility – The world has changed from 50 years ago. Younger audiences have sporadic working hours, increased travel, and commitments to sports leagues, clubs, or other hobbies. This increased workload creates a need for a flexible subscription instead of a traditional subscription.
- Increased cost – Just as inflation has affected everything, subscription prices are also increasing. While still a better deal than buying tickets individually, some patrons can’t afford two subscriptions at once. Patrons are willing to pay more for individual tickets because it is still a smaller chunk of money at one time. At Weathervane, we offer a payment plan option so you don’t miss out on the season!

How You Can Help
As a patron, there are many ways you can help your favorite theatre. The most helpful way to support a theatre from a theatre’s perspective is to become a subscriber. If that’s not a possibility, your support in any other fashion is helpful. Whether you buy a ticket to an individual show, make a monetary donation, or donate your time, all of these things help a theatre’s bottom line.
At Weathervane, we’ve heard feedback and noticed the buying changes, so we crafted season subscription options that offer consistency or flexibility, whichever suits your needs better.. Here are the options you can choose from:
- Traditional Five-Show Subscription: Includes our four main season shows plus the choice of a fifth show for $150. You’ll come on the same night and in the same seat for the entire season. Tickets break down to $30 a piece, meaning you get five shows for the price of four! This consistent option still allows flexibility if you need to change to a different date within a production.
- Five-Show Choose Your Own Subscription: Similar to a traditional subscription, but without the commitment to every show on the same day. Receive five credits to see the shows in any combination. See one show five times or bring four friends with you to see a show. This flexibility lets you see what you want and when you want for only $150 per subscription. Redeem your tickets as early as February 1st or as late as the night-of (as long as seats are available)!
- Three-Show Choose Your Own Subscription: Following the same concept of the five-show option, the three-show is $99 and allows you to see any of the Weathervane-produced ACTED performances (four main summer shows plus the melodrama). This option saves you $15 over buying tickets individually.
If a subscription really isn’t possible, we’d love you in the theatre in any capacity. For our musicals, we offer a general admission performance where tickets are half off adult-priced tickets. For our plays, we offer a tiered pricing performance; a limited number of tickets start at $5 each and then move to the $10 tier and so on until we hit the $20 tier.
